Newcastle Airport History![]() | ![]() |
Newcastle Airport started
life on 26th July 1935 with a grass runway, a club house, a hangar, workshops,
an ambulance room with garage and petrol pumps. The first scheduled flights flew
between Newcastle, Croyden, and Perth Scotland, these services were operated by
North Eastern
Airways using Rapide and 8-seater Airspeed Envoy aircraft.
Jim Denyer was appointed first airport manager in 1952, and his main aim was to put Newcastle Airport on the map, and in that same year Hunting Air transport commenced flying to Bovingdon in London, and not long afterwards further routes were being added, flying to Northern Ireland , Dublin, Amsterdam and Dusseldorf, this made a big impact to Newcastle Airport and by the late 1954s there were 35 flight services a week being operated.
In the 1960s package holidays became an important aspect to north east passengers travelling by air to sunshine destinations, so now Newcastle airport was carving out a major role in encouraging business and development in the North East of England. The local authorities came together in 1963 realizing the airport needed further development, so a firm was appointed to construct and expand Newcastle Airport. Some 18 months later construction work began. The now modern airport was complete and competing against the top International Airports catering for both scheduled and charter services.
Within 6 years Newcastle airport passengers doubled to 700,000 per annum, and come the mid 1970s the airport was being overcrowded with passengers squeezing their way through the now too small airport terminals.
The first ever Jumbo jet arrived at Newcastle International Airport all the way from the United States America, this signaling Newcastles Airport potential to play in the Intercontinental league. The continued growth in airport passengers came when in 1984 the airport topped 1.24 million.
With so much success Newcastle airport required an additional 2400 surface-level car-parking spaces and the extended and improved terminal building which was opened on the 26th May 1994 by the Princess Royal.
Newcastle airport passengers were continuing to grow and in October 2000 a major extension was undertaken and officially opened by the prime minister Tony Blair. On the 4th May 2001 a further major step for the development of Newcastle Airport was taken by the 7 local authority shareholders when 49% of the shares in the Airport Company were sold to Copenhagen Airport, thus ensuring a truly international Newcastle Airport.
Newcastle
Airport continues to grow with substantial numbers of passengers using the airport
terminals, with passenger numbers now reaching the 3.3 million mark, Newcastle
Airport looks set to reach new heights.
