Edinburgh International Airport

Started its airport life in 1977 when opened by her majesty the Queen. Originally the airport airfield was known as Turnhouse aerodrome, the aerodrome was established for the Royal Flying Corps in 1915, For many years it fulfilled a military role before responsibility was handed from
the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of Aviation in 1960. The aerodrome was operational during the First World War and later to became RAF Turnhouse.

The original facility was sited close to the main East Coast railway line. Aircraft arrived in crates on trains, were assembled and sent into action from the grass strip.

The first shuttle service linking Edinburgh Airport with London took off in 1947 and was operated by British European Airways.
Edinburgh Airport was taken over by BAA plc (previously the British Airports Authority) in 1971.

The BAA have invested heavily in it's facilities at Edinburgh Airport since then. Since 1999 over £100 million has been spent to extend and upgrade terminal facilities. The airport has a modern terminal building, two main runways and a large cargo operation,
this has enabled Edinburgh Airport to grow its airport passenger numbers in exceeding 7 million passengers, in fact Edinburgh Airport is now Scotland's busiest for scheduled International flights, and there is approximately 128 daily flights between Edinburgh Airport and the five London Airports.

In excess of 80 destinations are catered for by 30 airlines at Edinburgh airport the airport has one runway and only one terminal.
